Hah, I know that guy on the left. Apparently he didn’t know what that other guy was doing until the end of the day.

john and fanny: rant-Response to Meagan
To Meagan and to all who struggle or have struggled with this subject:
I understand your frustration. I used to get all worked up about the dividing line between art and craft. I was tired of getting responses like “you’re a fiber artist, how cute!” or “so what you just knit and sew?” It’s exhausting.
I have a hard time defining what is and is not art. In fact, I feel pompous and rude even trying to tell someone what makes something art. I don’t know, and I don’t think that the ones who claim to have a complete knowledge of what defines art have a clue either.
It is important to remember that there are trends in art. Just because something isn’t popular doesn’t mean it isn’t art. When modern art came about, all of the artists shunned decorative art and vice versa.
What I know is that art is incredibly broad and the parameters that define it are almost endless. There is nothing wrong with having a message behind your art that is dark, sexual, scientific, philosophical, ethical, religious, environmental, or political. There is also nothing wrong with having a message behind your art that is light, humorous, about inner beauty, family, friendships, or just about the subject matter itself.
My sculpture professor told me something this year that I think I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life, “You don’t have to be as good as your peers, you have to be as great as Michelangelo.” Take what your peers say with a grain of salt, listen to what is constructive, and if they have nothing constructive to say that you can improve on, then they simply just don’t understand your work. The harsh reality of being an intellectual is that you will constantly be judged, criticized, and walked on. Never let the world define who they want you to be, never let them take away the light and beauty that you show through your art.

A girl in high school drew this… had to laugh at it for a while.
